Judging the past by the standards of today is ridiculous and pointless. All kinds of evil has been done in God's name and still is being done. All kinds of great things were done and are being done in God's name also.

Wrong premise. Water does not cleanse the soul. Baptism is symbolic, (1 Peter 3:21) the blood of Christ is not. I take everything to do with God's word seriously, sorry if that's not what you were after.
