In a church service last night, the preacher was contrasting eternal life with eternal death. Eternal life, he said, is heaven and eternal death is hell, or eternal separation from God. I've never heard the expression "eternal death"; I looked for it in the New Testament but wasn't able to find it. Does anyone know if it's there?

I've always thought of death as final and can't really grasp how it can be "eternal." Any thoughts?

You may find this video useful in your quest to understand what it means to perish, the opposite of eternal life in John 3:16.

I haven't seen the phrase "eternal death" in KJV. But, I suppose in the new translations and revisions you might find it there.

Eternal Damnation is a Biblical fact, no matter what name one attaches to it..

Matthew
25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
25:42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:
25:43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.
25:44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?
25:45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did [it] not to one of the least of these, ye did [it] not to me.
25:46 And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while. Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. Mar_3:29 But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

Eternal damnation is another way to say eternal judgment. All we have to do is find out what the eternal judgment is:

Rev_20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.
Rev_20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

The second death is the eternal judgment making it an eternal death.
