Hola, Scholars! I'm working on a one-day study of 1 Peter and thought I would run this verse past those of you who don't take things so seriously.

If gold and silver are considered impure and thus cannot be used to purify a person's soul, why would water be any different?

1 Peter 1:18-19 KJV - "Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, [as] silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot . . ."

Hiya…. I’m not sure, but I think that God is basically telling us here that we cannot be saved by the traditions of man or anything that our parents did—that salvation is only through the blood of Jesus. There may be a deeper teaching; I ain’t scholarly enough. :)

Oh, I think you are! All people who have the same Love for Jesus that God has for his Son in their hearts, these are the people to whom I pay particular attention regarding what they believe. Those who are angry, however, their opinions mean little.

Why would "water" come up, since it is not in that passage which speaks of the blood of Christ. Also "corruptible" things is not the same as "impure things". Both silver and gold can be purified to a very high degree, and in the natural realm they are not really "corruptible", but in the spiritual realm it means that they are just worthless metals. Peter is comparing the world's values vs God's values.

In your wildest of imaginations, you couldn't possibly understand why I might mention water? Not even a possibility, eh?

Wrong premise. Water does not cleanse the soul. Baptism is symbolic, (1 Peter 3:21) the blood of Christ is not. I take everything to do with God's word seriously, sorry if that's not what you were after.

Totally irrelevant in this context. But you failed to appreciate what I said even though it fully answered your question.

Joh 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.

Act 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Rom 6:5 For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.

1Pe 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water.
1Pe 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

You cannot cut out the middle man and we must identify with the man Christ Jesus by repenting of our sins, and being water baptized, and receiving the Holy Spirit.

To be honest, I don't like the way that you approach me. Therefore, I'm going to back down for the sake of peace and leave you be. I'd rather do that than go back and forth like children in the 2nd grade.

Ephesians 4:16 NIV - 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

I hear you, but isn't water a part of the cursed and dying world? I'm not opposed to the idea, for the Baptism of John alone causes me to leave the door open to his Baptism having some kind of Heavenly authority.

Don't over analyze it. The gospel teaches that new believers should get baptized. Quit looking for excuses not to do it; just obey the gospel and do it. There will be plenty of time to learn its full significance once it's done.

“Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing. “
‭‭Acts‬ ‭8:35-40‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.

For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭10:44, 46-48‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Jesus name cleanses those baptized into him

“For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭15:3‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

….knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin.

Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:3-4, 6-8, 11-12‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“in whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ: buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.

And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2:11-14‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,

and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:38‬ ‭KJV‬‬

We believe Jesus died for our sins and was buried i to death on our behalf , and rose from the dead for our justification . That’s why we get baptized we believe the truth of that so we get baptized in his name who died for our sins

In his name we are buried beneath the surface and then raised back up by the man of God baptizing us is in his name .

The effective power is in believing when we’re baptized we should know we’re getting buried with Jesus who died for our sins and the rest of our life is lived in his resurrection the birth of the new man who is raised up having his sins remitted and God says this of them who are joined together in baptism with his son

“and lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭3:17‬ ‭

baptism is an act of faith because we believe what he said

“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. ( who died for our sins and rose up for our justification ) There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.”
‭‭Galatians‬ ‭3:26-29‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭1:1‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.”
‭‭John‬ ‭1:6‬ ‭KJV‬‬

John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. And there went out unto him all the land of Judæa, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭1:4-5‬ ‭

“And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him: and there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭1:9-11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“(But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)”
‭‭John‬ ‭7:39‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:32-33‬ ‭

“Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins,

and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.”
‭‭Acts‬ ‭2:38-39‬ ‭KJV‬‬

notice how baptism for repentance and remission of sins doesn’t go away but only now they receive the spirit like Jesus did ?

thats why the apostles didn’t need to get baptized again they had been already and later they received the spirit like John told them they would

baptism wasn’t fully complete until Jesus ascended to heaven and gave his spirit .
It doesn’t change it becomes complete and we can receive the Holy Spirit of Jesus the son of God
